| The
true value of an antique is the appreciation of the craftsmanship
of years gone by when there was little or no automation.
Ivory was
founded in 2005 for the import of antiques, especially
furniture from the Indian sub-continent.
Our consultant frequently travels
to India to inspect and advise the restoration factory
as to the procedure of restoration to be followed for
each item of furniture. The furniture is examined for
pests such as termites, woodworms, Borer beetles, and
wood-rot and fungus and for defects or damage. |
 |
Most of the furniture items are in Old Burma Teak, Rosewood,
Mahogany, Walnut and various other hard woods that are most
resistant to insect attack.
 |
The process
of restoration is a very slow and tedious one as the items
which are mostly over a hundred years old have several
coats of different finishes like French polish, varnish,
lacquer and paint. All these layers have to be removed
using various techniques till the original wood is seen
at the surface. |
Paint removers, thinners, turpentine, white spirit and other
similar chemicals are used in the cleaning process. Thereafter,
the wood is checked for cracks and defects that need repair.
After the necessary repairs, the wood is washed with a light
detergent several times to remove any residual chemicals or
removers. Then the process of finishing starts. After the application
of several coats of sealers, with sanding between each coat
of sealer, till the wood-grain is completely sealed, the staining
process is started and the final coat of lacquer is applied.
Then the items either have cane work or upholstery done.
Before the packing for shipment, our
representative travels to India to inspect the items before
they are packed and to ensure they are stored in a controlled
atmosphere, awaiting shipment to various destinations around
the world.
